Atlanta, GA – Counsel for the City of Calhoun, Maurice Walker, the American Bail Coalition and Georgia Association of Professional Bondsmen were in Atlanta for oral argument in the landmark bail case Walker v. Calhoun, the first of the federal bail cases arguing for a federal equal protection and due process right to affordable bail that were contested by a City or State.
This time, Alec Karakatsanis, of the Civil Rights Corp, and formerly Equal Justice Under Law Foundation, was nowhere to be found. Instead, the argument was conducted by Daniel S. Volchuk of the prestigious WilmerHale law firm.
Arguing for the City of Calhoun was Samuel L. Lucas of the Brinson Askew Berry law firm in Rome, Georgia. For the American Bail Coalition and Georgia Association of Professional Bondsmen, Paul D. Clement of Kirkland Ellis.
“We were pleased with how the oral argument turned out on May 15 in Atlanta. It was great to sit in that historic courtroom with a pretty good feeling that the order is likely going to get vacated.” -Jeff Clayton, Executive Director, American Bail Coalition
