Suffolk County Sheriff: Bail Reform Law Is An ‘Atrocity’

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The Suffolk County sheriff on Wednesday called the new bail reform law an “atrocity” for allowing potentially dangerous criminals back out into the community.
Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon says what happened on Jan. 1 when the bail reform law went into effect was shocking.
“In Suffolk County, we’ve released 301 inmates back into the community – 41 of them were gang members,” he said.
The Suffolk County sheriff says the bail reform is hurting more people that it’s helping – especially the victims.
“Think about the victims of the crimes that these individuals allegedly committed against,” Toulon said. “How do you think those victims feel? We think about all the people who have been human traffic victims of human trafficking here in Suffolk County, and now those individuals are going to be released back into the community.”
He says he wants the judges to have the discretion on whether to release a person after they’re arraigned in court.
Toulon’s criticisms come after New York City Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget Brennan also said the bail reform law could get in the way of the federal fentanyl law, which aims to clamp down on international drug traffickers.
